I've been finding something of a routine, updating here on a far more regular basis, and generally engaging with writing on a far more regular basis of late, and it is proving good for both the mind and soul.
This seems largely due to dabbling in much shorter forms of fiction. For years I have been wrestling with complex plots and detailed narratives while trying to make progress with full length novel ideas, and while I still have every desire and intent to pursue this form, writing flash fiction and planning and researching short stories since the start of the year has proved a real tonic. I have also been reading a variety of examples, online and in anthologies, and reconnecting with a form I used to enjoy, but had unfairly neglected.
There will still be none uploaded here for the time being - part of my research has been to earmark competitions and publishing opportunities, and I want to have a go at exploring these avenues first.
Many years ago, on an Arvon course, an established writer asked if my stories were published, and I reacted with bemusement. I couldn't see the merit in them that he perhaps detected. It would be nice to put his faith to the test...
