It hasn't been a bad start to the year on the writing front, all things considered. Despite the usual stresses and pressures of getting the money to pay the bills, I have managed to steal little bits of time to do some writing, and currently have no less than five different pieces submitted to various competitions and websites for esteemed judges and editors to cast a critical eye over.
I'll be honest; some are reworked, older pieces, but a number are brand new, and pieces I think have some genuine merit. They may not find their audience straight away, but since returning to writing it has all been about getting the work out there to see what happens. If they are not successful I will try elsewhere, or rework and rejig them, and try again.
I'm not really in pursuit of glory and adulation, though of course I won't snub it if it comes. The little victories will do for now - positive feedback even in a rejection would be valuable, and a long-listing would be absolutely brilliant. To date, my successes have been moderate but thrilling, and this only spurs me on.
To paraphrase Les McQueen of Creme Brûlée fame, "It's a shit business..." But I wouldn't have it any other way.
Bring on the rejections. Let's be 'aving you.
